Making slippery new friends at Yangshou market |
|
Where it's at
Yangshuo is located in Guangxi province, just an
hour and a half from Guilin by bus. The town is surrounded
by imposing limestone peaks and the villages and scenic countryside
in the vicinity of the town make this a popular destination
for travellers. There is a great deal of western influence
in Yangshuo, but if you wander the back streets you'll find
street stalls selling authentic souvenirs and exotic foods.
Foods to find here
Chinese food is reknowned for its unique cooking style and
unusual recipes, many of which were developed 5,000 years
ago and have been preserved throughout history. If you've
been travelling in China for some time you may be relieved
to find that Yangshuo, with its western cafes, cinemas and
stores, is somewhere you can buy a good cup of coffee, pancakes,
and even a pizza.
Nonetheless, perhaps pandering to travellers' wishes to sample
ingredients which would be deemed inedible anywhere but China,
street hawkers and stall holders do offer unusual dishes such
as snake meat to the more adventurous punter. |
