What is Naturism?

Naturism is the practice of total nudity in a communal (non sexual) setting. It is more than a practice, it’s a complete movement of wholesomeness and stability of mind and body with complete contact with natural elements like sun and water, as nature intended.

Its critics say it is just an excuse for sexual shenanigans and flabby people to perform outrageously unnecessary beach sports like volleyball and get sand in all kinds of uncomfortable places – its practitioners believe smutty connotations are symptomatic of the modern sexualisation of the human form – they believe in the health benefits and openness of accepting all body shapes and forms, plus it sure beats nasty bikini line tans!

Best Naturist Beaches

The Croatian Adriatic Coast is one of the friendliest naturist destinations. There are more than 30 official naturist beaches and many more unofficial ones on the coastline.

Croatia was the first country in the world to offer nudist holidays. It’s common to find naked people all over the coast, not just in nudist camps.

The Croatian say the British royals started the whole thing off when King Edward VIII and his mistress Wallis Simpson (Mrs Simpson whom he later abdicated the throne for) came here in the 1930’s to enjoy the view from the island of Rab, and she took a nude swim in the Bay of Kanda.

Koversada is the largest and most popular naturist resort in Europe and is celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2001. The first visiting naturist was famous adventurer and playboy Giacomo Casanova who decided to strip off after a tiresome journey. The rest is history.

It’s more famous beaches include the Golden Horn (titter ye not!), and the recent winner of a naturist poll revealed Valalta in Rovinj as the naturist’s choice beach.

Naturist Tips:

  • Don’t be the first to strip off – if no one else is naked this spot is probably not for naturists and you could be arrested for indecency!
  • No overt sexual activity should be indulged in on nudist areas.
  • Be careful taking photographs, ask permission for those in shot if they are strangers.
  • Respect the privacy and space of others, and don’t use nudity as an excuse to “chat up” members of the opposite sex.
  • Come prepared – many nude beaches are remote and do not offer the commercial amenities of other beaches.
