Where to Stay in Beijing

Like most capital cities, Beijing offers a wide range of accommodation, from five-star hotels to traveller hostels and cheap guesthouses.

Four or Five-Star Hotels:

Beijing Hotel
At the five-star end, check out the Beijing Hotel with its unbeatable combination of history (it is the first and oldest hotel in the city) and location. The hotel is literally located just next door to the Forbidden City, and on the other side of it there is the great Wangfujing shopping street.

Room rates start at $160/night and off-season rates are negotiable. Guests can indulge in its five restaurants, fitness centre, pool, business centre and shops.

Red Capital Club
The Red Capital Club is essentially a 200-year-old courtyard mansion converted into a small and beautiful boutique hotel. Located in a hutong (back alley), this hotel has only five rooms that are decorated in different themes. For example, there is a courtesan room, a room decorated in Chinese antiques and a room decked out with communist memorabilia that is dedicated to writer Edgar Snow.

Apart from a great wine bar in an underground cold war bunker, decorated in 1960's Communist kitsch, they also have a delicious courtyard restaurant nearby and hotel staff will be happy to take you there in a bicycle rickshaw.

For more information check out Red Capital Club's website or email Lawrence Brahm

Beijing Landmark Towers Hotel

Located in the groovy Chaoyang district, Beijing Landmark Towers Hotel is a good choice if you're out looking for a 4-star hotel with reasonable rates. Even though it is a bit of a distance from the city centre, it is near Sanlitun's good restaurants and nightclubs.

Amenities include good rooms, a business centre, a good supermarket on the premises and as a bonus, it is also the home of Beijing's Hard Rock Café.

Moderately-Priced Hotels:

Hao Yuan Binguan
Hao Yuan Binguan is a converted traditional courtyard house with only eight rooms for rent. It is not the usual run-of-the-mill accommodation and with its moderate prices, this hotel presents a viable option.

Budget Accommodation:

Red House
Conveniently located in central Beijing, Red House is a hostel that offers self-catering accommodation at reasonable rates for travellers.

English is not widely spoken, but Red House's excellent location and prices are definitely attractive enough for the budget-conscious traveller. The hostel is also located just a few blocks from Dongzhimen subway / bus station and Beijing's nightlife centre Sanlitun.
