Where to Stay in South-East China

As recommended by the crew of Globe Trekker: South-East China

Hyatt Regency Macau
Esparteiro
Taipa Island
Macau, China
Telephone: +853 83 1234 Fax: +853 83 0195
Email: hrmcomm *at* macau.ctm.net

Most people come to Macau to gamble. If you want to combine exploring local culture with relaxing in style then the Hyatt is a good bet. Located on the island of Taipa, the Hyatt Regency Macau is a five-star luxury resort hotel set in three acres of lush greenery. The hotel has 326 rooms and suites, many with panoramic views of Macau city across the Taipa Bridge. Explorers can head in the opposite direction to the island of Coloane to visit the small Catholic churches and wander the narrow back alleys reminiscent of southern Europe.

Guangzhou Youth Hostel
2 Shamian Sijie, Guangzhou, Shamian Dao, Guangdong
Telephone: +86 20 8121 8298 Fax: 86 20 8121 8298

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province and the gateway into South-East China. The Youth Hostel on Shamian Dao is the perfect place to ease yourself into the hustle and bustle of the mainland. For around $25 USD per night you will have the benefits of a clean air-conditioned room, helpful English-speaking staff and a great location near to impressive colonial architecture, Qingping market, Pearl River, and plenty of coffee shops and restaurants.

Minzu Shanzhuang
Zhangjiajie Forest Park, Zhangjiajie, Hunan.
Telephone: +86 744 571 2516 Fax: 86 744 571 2516

This is the kind of hotel that travellers love to talk about. It wins top points for its unusual wooden Tujian architecture, charming giggly maids, and convenient location close to the entrance of the Wulingyuan National Park. It does not score very highly on the level of English spoken by its staff nor for the number of bugs, insects and mosquitoes that congregate in the bedrooms. But what do you expect for ten dollars a night?

Cactus Resort
Yalong Bay National Resort District, Sanya City, Hainan Dao
Telephone: +86 898 8856 8866 Fax: 86 898 8856 8867

One of the less well-known provinces in China is Hainan Dao. The country's so-called Hawai'i of the East is located on roughly the same latitude as much of Vietnam and Hawai'i. Hainan Dao provides a welcome subtropical break from the rest of mainland China. The Cactus Resort is the largest and most affordable establishment in Sanya. If the beautiful coastline near the hotel does not tempt you, the hotel also boasts the largest outdoor swimming pool in Asia, complete with a replica Mayan temple and bar in an oasis in the center!

Guanguanglou Hotel
Meizhou Island, Fuijian
Telephone: 86 594 5092122 Cell Phone +1303083910

The Guanguanglou Hotel is very near to the ferry terminal (400 metres on the left). Rooms can be bargained down to $20 USD per night during festivals. Local guides do not speak English, so be sure to take an English-speaking interpreter with you or brush up your Mandarin.
