Indonesia: Where to Stay in Java and Sumatra

Java

Jakarta

Budget:

Tator
Jalan Jaksa 37
(323 940)

Jalan Jaksa is the heart of Jakarta's traveler scene. There are loads of losmen and hostels along this road, along with restaurants, bookshops and batik stores. Tator is a favourite with many travelers. The spotless rooms cost about $10 to $15 a night and the price includes breakfast.

Moderate:

Arcadia
Jalan Wahid Hasyim Tel: (230 0050)

The Arcadia is a stylishly modern, clean hotel situated right in the heart of Jakarta. It's rooms cost from $40 a night and they all have mini bar, television and hot shower. One of the attractions of this hotel is the little lane that runs down to the left - packed with bars and clubs playing African music until the early hours.

Top End:

Mandarin Oriental
Jl Thamrin Tel: (314 1307)

Really fancy upper-end hotel right at Jakarta's 'Welcome Monument'. Great views across Jakarta. Rooms start at $80 per night and the hotel has Italian and Chinese restaurants, a great business centre and a nightclub.

Krakatau

Budget:

Handelum Island
(Book through permit office)

There is only one place to stay if you're trekking on Handelum Island and its very basic rooms are $8 a night. There are only 6 (rather shabby) bedrooms and the walls are paper thin. You feel really cut off here, but its isolation makes it special, with deer grazing just outside your window and beautiful sunsets.

Moderate:

Lippo Carita Hotel
Carita

The rooms are $20 a night and they are all on the beach. They are clean and spacious with televisions, hot water and air conditioning. On a clear day you can see Krakatau in the distance. The food is very good value - fresh seafood, Indonesian specialities and western dishes available.

Yogykarta

Budget:

Ella
Jl Sosrodipuran Tel: 0274 582219

Clean fan-cooled rooms, warm showers, free tea and coffee, wonderfully friendly staff and good information on local sights. $2 to $5 including breakfast

Moderate:

Manohara Hotel
Borobudur Tel: 0293 88131

One hours drive from Yogyakarta but situated with stunning views of Borobudur, this hotel is airy and spacious with good deals on rooms off season. Access to Borobudur before the crowds, can be organized through the manager. They rent mopeds if you want to see more of the area.

Expensive:

Novotel Yogyakarta

Central Yogyakarta hotel with all amenities including a nice swimming pool, lively bar, business centre and poolside restaurant. Rooms from $50 including breakfast.

Kudus

Budget:

Hotel Air Mancur
Jl Permuda 70 Tel: 0291 32514

For around $5 you can stay at this bizarre hotel, bursting with caged birds, monkeys, mini-waterfalls and lily ponds. The rooms are comfortable and reasonable value.

Moderate:

Hotel Griptha
Large, clean rooms for about $18 a night. The rooms have tv and air conditioning, an average restaurant and a large, rather impressive swimming pool.

Sumatra

Bukit Lawang

Budget:

Jungle Inn

100m from canoe crossing

Popular losmen with some of the most spacious and comfortable rooms available for under $10. The restaurant serves some good curries and cakes.

Moderate:

Rindu Alam

About $20 a night gets you a large room and your own bathroom in this impersonal hotel to the west of the bus station. Located in the quieter part of town, it's a good place from which to start trekking the surrounding hills. Serves some great banana pancakes.

Danau Toba

Budget:

Bagus Bay Homestay

Tuk Tuk Tel: 0625 41481

Clean and basic bungalows set in large grounds with excellent facilities including a pool table, badminton court, board games, bar, videos and a twice weekly Batak dancing display. About $2 to $5 a night.

Moderate:

Carolinas
Tuk Tuk Tel: 0625 41520

Really special hotel with accommodation in the form of huge Batak style bungalows, each with an amazing lakeside view (approximately $10 a night). There is a diving board, swimming platform and small beach. The water is warm and clear for swimming. The restaurants food is very good and great value.

Palau Nias

Moderate:

Sorake Beach Hotel
Jamborai Tel: 0639 211 95

This is a beautiful hotel, set in immense grounds by the beach. Accomodation is in stylish wooden bungalows with veranda's facing the grounds or the sea. The resort must have been beautiful in its heyday but a drop in tourist numbers has meant it has fallen into disrepair. About $20 a night.
