Although the communist era is officially over,
no-one can deny that its left its mark on Moscow. Statues,
monuments, architecture and the impressively clean and punctual
metro system are constant reminders that Russia was at the
centre of the communist world for 74 years. For the traveller
that wants to take a little bit of history home in their backpack,
its still possible to purchase original pieces of communist
propaganda.
Where to Bag a Bargain
The weekend market at Izmaylovsky Park, to the east
of Moscow, is undoubtedly one of the best places to find original
and authentic souvenirs. You can pick up plenty of interesting
trinkets, including pins and badges, statues & photos
of Lenin, photographs, posters and books.
Theres a good deal more than memorabilia on offer at
Izmaylovsky Park, too. Its a place where artists &
crafts people congregate to sell their works, stall-holders
tout antiques, jewellery, toys, clothing, fur hats and all
manner of odd but authentic merchandise.
The market is open on Saturdays and Sundays, and is just
a couple of minutes walk from Izmaylovsky Park metro.
What's it Worth?
It goes without saying that the better condition a piece of
memorabilia is in the more itll be worth. Some of the
rarer items already command high prices from collectors, and
even pieces that cost a few roubles today are bound to increase
in value over the course of time.
