The oasis town of Zagora in Morocco's Draa Valley is less
than twenty miles from the edge of the Sahara desert. The
spot has been inhabited since time immemorial, and although
there's nothing much of historical interest in the town itself
it's a good base from which to explore the surrounding area.
You can arrange a camel trek into the heart of the Sahara
from Zagora, and voyage across the dunes on your ship of the
desert. Expeditions can be from 3 hours to seven days, depending
on how much time or stamina you have to spare.
Trekkers Tips
Sandstorms can blow up quickly and change the whole
atmosphere of the desert. Always go with an experienced guide
who knows the area and can give instruction should a storm
strike.
When camel riding, it's a good idea to wear a see-throught
veil over your face, known as a shash. The shash helps retain
moisture and keep the sand out of your eyes. When the wind
blows, the see-through veil can be wrapped across the face,
protecting it from the elements.
