Our Journey Path (as featured
in Pilot Guides: Deep South USA)
We start our journey in the Great Smokey Mountains,
then drive south to Atlanta, Georgia. From there we
catch the bus to Tuskegee, Alabama, then on to the
Gulf Shores. Next, we head up to the Mississippi
Delta along Highway 61, passing through Vicksberg
and Clarksdale, ending our journey at the final resting
place of Elvis Presley, in Memphis, Tennessee
On the Road
By Car
The best way to travel around the states is in a hired car.
A gallon of petrol in the States costs less than a litre of
water and car rental is available for around $50 a day, though
prices vary greatly according to location and type of car.
This option will afford the traveller the most flexibility,
but to rent a car anywhere in the states you must make sure
you have a valid driver's licence and be at least 25 years
of age.
By Bus
If you want to try out the bus, the Greyhound is the
main bus line to use around the Deep South, and you can get
a ten-day pass all over for $250. The fares don't tend to
be cheap, but there are often discounts available for long
distances. You can only make reservations for Greyhound bus
journeys by buying your tickets in advance.
By Train
You could also choose rail transport. Amtrak is the
only cross-country railroad in the US. Like taking the bus,
the railroad is not cheap, but purchasing tickets well in
advance could cut your costs significantly. A popular route
to take by train is the Memphis-Jackson-New Orleans route,
and other popular routes can be taken efficiently by train.
The high prices of both buses and trains in the US, though,
make a good argument for opting to use a hire car if you can.
By Streetcar
If you want to follow in the footsteps of Vivien Lee then
take a trip on the New Orleans streetcar. It runs west
from the French Quarter, through the Warehouse district, to
the picturesque Garden District. Though you may not find yourself
in A Streetcar Named Desire, as Vivien did in the classic
film, You can get to a place called 'Desire' by taking the
city bus. |
