Great Barrier Reef

Great Barrier Reef

One of Australia’s premier tourist attractions, the Great Barrier Reef contributes over $5 billion to the country’s economy per year through its 2 million annual visitors. One of the most naturally spectacular sights on the planet, the Great Barrier Reef is located just outside of the city of Cairns. The Reef is so vast it can be glimpsed from outer space and is home to several endemic and endangered species. The Reef has been under increased threat due to the invasiveness of the tourism industry, overfishing and rising ocean temperatures, but there are a number of ongoing efforts to preserve the reef. In addition to its natural and economic importance, the Reef is a sight of major spiritual significance to Indigenous Australians and Torres Strait Islanders.
