Salvador

Salvador

The largest city of the northeastern state of Bahia, Salvador is one of Brazil’s most important cities, economically, historically and culturally. A major port city established in 1549, it functioned as the country’s first capital under Portuguese control. The colonial influence is evident in the present day, epitomised by its distinct architecture. The city has a significant African population, which gives the city a distinct cultural identity different from other major cities in Brazil. This combination of Portuguese and African cultures resonates through its music and its cuisine. Salvador is well-known for its major carnival, considered to be the largest in the world.
