Washington’s certainly the city to visit if you want to learn about the history and politics of the world’s current superpower, but it’s the hidden depths of the city outside the limelight that make it such a rewarding place to explore – the hip nightlife of Adam’s Morgan with its concentration of Ethiopian restaurants, the unique black music of go-go played in the bars of U-Street, the fifth largest gay community in the States based around Dupont Circle – Washington has far more than just power and money, it is a vibrant city with soul and substance.
