Join us on Friday April 18, 2008 @ 8.00 am EST, 1.00 pm GMT (and 8.00 pm in Singapore) - for a LIVE CHAT SESSION with Globe Trekker presenter: LAVINIA TAN. If you have any burning questions for Lavinia, get posting here now...
Born and raised in Singapore, Lavinia is well-versed in the language of Singlish (Singapore's own brand of English), experienced enough to know that under-arm deodorant is a must in this humid tropical island, and that the world is her oyster - if only she'd stop trying to eat it with a squeeze of lemon...

Strangely, I have this feeling that the last web chat still isn't finished?... hmm...
Still, sounds good. I'll come up with a few questions.
I think I've only seen one GT hosted by Lavinia (Hong Kong, I think??). I haven't seen many of the latest series though - GT season 10, or is it 11? |

Globe Trekker Hong Kong was one of Megan's.
Lavinia has done Globe Trekker Chinatown, Florida and the Bahamas, plus voice-overs for Globe Guides.

Thanks Helen.
Oh yeah, I've seen a couple then. The Florida one I remember now. Also, I saw that one with her on the boat with those two martial arts dudes. (That's the one I thought might be Hong Kong.) |

Hi everyone!!! Thanks so much for your questions. Really cool to be here. Things in Singapore are great. The weather's a little bit strange, really rainy days and other days it's really hot... |

| Hey Laviniaaa!!! OK I have a question for you... where in the world would you like to travel, someplace you've never been before? And why? |
In my fantasy world I would really like travel to the Congo - but I don't think we call it that any more. Mainly because I don't know if we're tough enough to survive those kind of conditions...
In the real world... I'd really like to travel to Tokyo and Japan - I really love everything about Japan, the culture, the anime - I'm learning the language (by myself), I love the food...!!! |

| Also... I think you need to learn the language before you really, really know what a country is like. Also their traditions are still thriving, and they are still so forward in various industries and trends. |

How many people usually travel with you on a show?
Can you recall some bloopers?
I think that will get me started for now.
 |
1. Married or single? ?It depends... is there any chance I might fancy you? I've never been a global dater but I can try.
2. Favorite place you have traveled? There's so many questions I love for different reasons... I think it has to be Phuket, Thailand - it's my favorite place because I've returned many times with different friends. I like to show them special places that are still there after so long. It was the place I learned to scuba dive and the 1st place I drove a car overseas. I liked it there too cos your money goes a long way.
3. Most exotic food ever eaten? Did you enjoy it? Actually here in Singapore - it was in a Japanese restaurant called "Hachi". This restaurant has now menu - you are at the mercy of the chef and the seasons of the year. I went in with 2 friends and we said give us anything! 1st dish was a real weird looking thing like a sack... it was white, lumpy... We were told it was actually a sperm sack!!! We were told it was from a whale - but I think they were joking. Once you get past the appearance and put it in your mouth it's actually really nice. Very creamy. Tastes like a milder version of oysters.
4. Favorite temple? if you ever visited more then a few. I've been to temples but haven't been taken by any I've seen so far. I've often been taken to visit temples but sometimes it feels a bit sterile and touristy. I do remember a temple tho from when I was young in Singapore. When I was small we went there and my ancestors' plaques were there - I got to hold incense sticks and run around and it was fun.
5. Favorite sunset? That has to be Kata Beach in Phuket - you have to make your way to this little reggae bar that's perched on the side of a cliff. When you look out you have a 100 degrees view of the sunset over the sea. And.. they make the BEST pina coladas!
6. Worst trek you were on. Phuket again. I was exploring a national park with my sister. But there weren't a lot of facilities and the paths weren't marked very clearly. We got lost and went off the beaten track, didn't realise we were lost. Then we were quite stubborn about it, insisted we weren't lost, and then got even more lost!!!
7. How many people usually travel with you on a show? About 5 to 6. The director, producer, camera guy, sound person and sometimes a local guide.
8. Can you recall some bloopers? That has to be the Kung Fu session in Globe Trekker Chinatown. We did this amazing fight sequence with 2 Kung Fu guys. After the fight... one of the 2 guys was lying on the floor and I didn't see him and fell right over him in front of the camera. |

Cool~the chat will be funny~
Here I got my question too:
Compare travelling by your own and travelling by presenting the globe trekker show, which do u think is more interesting?
 |
I think presenting with Globe Trekker is definitely more interesting. That's because you have to do stuff whether like it or not, like jumping into a muddy swamp wearing an evening dress (an ancient Florida tradition, apparently). The Globe Trekker directors sometimes make presenters eat what they think is really strange stuff. But hey... I'm Asian... I eat strange stuff every day... The sad thing is that even tho you get to meet great people and do cool stuff - once your shoot is done you have to move on quickly to the next location when you'd really like to stick around and see more. That's the downside. |

This chat is coming up soon, and i wanted to make sure that i get my questions in case I forget (or more likely when i don't get up in time- 7 am is early:lol:).
I was on exchange in Singapore in the fall of 2007 (not at SMU but at NUS ), and I am missing the city, the amazing cheap food, and the people I met there.
Here are some questions. I hope you're not intimidated by the number, and don't feel compelled to answer all of them lah! (<correct usage?)
-What is your favorite Singaporean dish? (Or what Singaporean food do you miss the most when you are away?)
-What is your favorite thing to do in Singapore? Favorite neighborhood?
-How do you adjust back to your "normal" everyday life after traveling and seeing and doing amazing things for prolonged periods of time?
-I am Asian, but I have lived in Texas my whole life, and I tend to use "y'all" (but most people I met in SEA would never guess that I am from Texas or even the US based on my ethnicity). I found myself trying to catch and refrain from saying "yall". In fact, I was sad when it creeped so quickly back into my speaking. I think you cover Singlish pretty well in the Florida/Bahamas episode and the other video clip. Anyways, my question is, when you normally travel, do you try to cover your Singlish?
-What are the top places you want to visit? Do you have any trips planned?
-What are your "must haves" while traveling?
-Did you meet Megan when she was in Singapore?
-Do people recognize you in Singapore or when you are traveling?
-Is your family supportive of your travels?
Thanks,
Tiffany from Texas |
Hey good job on the use of Singlish!!!
1. -What is your favorite Singaporean dish? (Or what Singaporean food do you miss the most when you are away?)
It's called Bak Chor Mee which translates as mincemeat noodles - very simple dish, it's about getting the bite of the noodles right and having a really good soup. The only time of condiment is the cooked mincemeat they sprinkle on top.
2.-What is your favorite thing to do in Singapore? Favorite neighborhood?
I do lots of street photography - for me it's really cool to find some small unexplored street, see the things that typical tourists to Singapore don't see. Favorite neighborhood is the East Side cos I was born there, and I lived there all my life. It's like the eastern part of Singapore.
3. -How do you adjust back to your "normal" everyday life after traveling and seeing and doing amazing things for prolonged periods of time?
The 1st couple of days after my 1st Globe Trekker I was quite drained - it was fun but very intense. Then you feel a bit change, like how come my schedule is so free and I have all this time on my hands... Best way to adjust is to make sure I have my own projects to do, keep busy, don't feel lonely. Sometimes I overdo it like plan a project for the day after I land like a radio show...
4. when you normally travel, do you try to cover your Singlish? I think the trick is off the camera - they get quite tickled by it - they think it's funny. I use expressions like "Laa" - it's just like "Yeahhhh!" Much depends on the context of when you use it. In Japan they have a lot of similar expressons like this. For us Peranakan people we have a lot of terms and phrases that explain how you really feel and convey the message I'm trying to say. My foreign friends like it a lot and learn very quickly what I'm saying.
5.-What are your "must haves" while traveling? Moisturising cream, my music, a book and a really healthy attitude - cos when you travel nothing ever goes the way you expect... it's about how you overcome any obstacles and make the trip work for you.
6. -Did you meet Megan when she was in Singapore? No but I would have loved to. The first thing i would have done would be to kowtow in front of her
7. -Do people recognize you in Singapore or when you are traveling? There's a really funny story, we were filming in Hong Kong, we were crossing the road when we got stopped by an old lady. My producer had walked on but she turned around and saw me talking to this lady. So when I went over to my producer she asked is that one of your fans? I said no she was asking for directions |

Hi Lavinia! It's great to meet u online. Not sure I can be there on Friday cos I'm away working. But... wanted to ask you a couple of questions:
1. What is your favoirte travel book?
2. Do you have a photo portfolio online (I saw you like photography in your bio)?
3. Can you tell us a typical Singaporean joke?
4. Is it difficult to learn Singaporean?
5. If you could present a Globe Trekker show for any destination in the world, where would that be? |
First, I would really love you it you look anything like your gorgeous avatar!
b]1. What is your favoirte travel book?[/b] My producer - they are like a book. They have all the contents, and they make everything happen for me. Plus, they take great care of you.
2. Do you have a photo portfolio online (I saw you like photography in your bio)? Let me know when you're coming to Singapore and I'll show you offline.
3. Can you tell us a typical Singaporean joke? Waaa... the problem is that the Singaporean jokes know are either racist or might lead to Malaysia or Indonesia bombing us. They really requrie face-to-face contact cos they use a lot of facial expressions and hand gestures. In order to maintain peaceful relations with my neigboring countries I'd rather no.
4. Is it difficult to learn Singaporean? No. Singlish is like the easiest thing you can pick up. Wahlau! Bon don't like tat leh? You have to say that with a high-pitched voice. The thing about Singaporeans is we speak very fast - a lot of Amercians and British think we compress our sentences. For example this is a real life story.... My friend's boyfriend was sitting in a large meeting in the Board Room of his company where he works. The boss man was giving a speech and my friend's boyfriend was feeling the underside of the conference room table... usually the underside of the table is usually raw wood so... what happened he accidentally pricked his finger and he jumped up and everyone looked at him in shock and he said - feeling a bit embaressed: I just have a small prick
5. If you could present a Globe Trekker show for any destination in the world, where would that be?[/quote] Japan. But not one show - 2 or 3 seasons of it. |

Aha... the wonders of editing. I was just sitting on the bike saying my piece to camera But I would love to learn how to ride a bike. I always imagined getting kidnapped - like in a movie - and making this amazing escape on a motorbike. |

Hello Lavinia
Which is your favourite Chinatown?
Have you ever visited the Clan Jetties in Penang? |
I actually like the Chinatown in Penang. The people there are actually living in the area. They are doing their business - it's not touristy. The food there is great and it's got a lot of street food and I like street food.
The Clan Jetties - I've been there about 3 times. I'm thinking about buying a place there Just kidding |

Hiya! Here's my questions...
Which cartoon character do you most identify with?
What's your ringtone?
What are you doing after this web chat? |
I think we all see ourselves in a quite a few cartoon characters. My friends they tell me I'm a living Japanese Anime character... I'm very noisy, I make a lot of weird noise, my face is a little bit like rubber - difficult to convey on a web chat tho...
My ringtone - use to be my cat. My cat is very interesting - he can sound like a chicken. He is in a class of his own. One day I was playing with him, hugging him and he started whining LOUDLY - I decided to record him and use that as a ringtone. It kinda freaks people out cos they think there's an animal in the room when it goes off and they just don't know what kind of animal it is.
After this web chat? I'm going to watch more Anime cartoons. Currently I'm watching a series called GTO it stands for Great Teacher Onivuka. |

1. Do you speak Cantonese? I'm learning that as well as Japanese.
2. Besides Singapore where would you like to live 2nd? Japan... seriously. As fun as it might sound it might be quite tough living there - I'd love to find out whether I could come to terms with being there.
3. Hope you will do more shows for Pilot Guides in the future.
Thanks Jay I hope so too. |

Yay, I've got as well some questions!
- What advice could you give to all the want-to-be-globetrekker-presenters here (inluding as well me)?
- On your travel, which moment/place/people/... has left the "strongest" memory for life, such as extremely funny/pretty/... or even scary?
- How have you made it to become a part of the globetrekker team?
- What do friends/people from school/work, who have known you before you became famous, think of you now? Have they've always known it that you're 'gonna make it' or doesn't it bother them really or how has it changed your life?*
- Which is the best film to watch for you?
Thank you lots for taking time!! I think you're really cool!
One of your fans, Viv |
1. - What advice could you give to all the want-to-be-globetrekker-presenters here (inluding as well me)?
1. You pray they are going to have a regional search for a host cos that's how I got lucky.
2. If that's what you really want to do - go for it. Get your showreel done, make copies, send it out.
3. And... just be yourself. That's something you can offer and no one can take away. Sometimes I find it hard to be myself and I'm working on that too.
4. - On your travel, which moment/place/people/... has left the "strongest" memory for life, such as extremely funny/pretty/... or even scary?
It's the Florida Naughty Boys - they're a group of strippers like old man strippers. Everyone has to be over 60 or 70 years old to quality. That experience when I saw them perform started from scary and it went to heartwarming, then it went to really enjoyable. They stripped down to these shiny g-string thongs. But there was nothing sleazy about it - just a group of guys have a good time and living life to the full. I'm not sure I'd make such an great oldie stripper but I hope to really get high on life like they do.
5. - How have you made it to become a part of the globetrekker team? There was a regional search, I went for it, got booted out of the semi-finals, got really depressed and after that you feel a bit suicidal but you still make sure you go to school. And then... they called my back as a wild card and then when that happens you just pray to as many gods as you feel oomfortable to.
6. - What do friends/people from school/work, who have known you before you became famous, think of you now? Have they've always known it that you're 'gonna make it' or doesn't it bother them really or how has it changed your life
I'm still the same actually, still making a fool of myself. I think they're not comfortable with who I am on camera because they get to see everything about me. They have the exclusive on who Lavinia Tan. Known I'm gonna make it? Yes cos she wouldn't SHUT UP!
7.- Which is the best film to watch for you?
ANIME!!! It's like the best way to destress - I can watch it and watch it and laugh and laugh ! |

Dear Lavinia, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. I hope you are doing well and I hope to see you on TV again soon.
My questions for you:
1. What was it like to be weightless (parabolic flight experience in Florida)?
2. Is there a certain type of trinket or souvenir you pick up when you travel abroad?
3. What is your favourite pass-time when you are not globetrekking the world?
4. What are some of the best dive spots you've been to?
Safe travels Lavinia and thanks again for taking the time to talk to your fans!!
*Big hug from Canada*
Cynthia |
1. What was it like to be weightless (parabolic flight experience in Florida)? The sensation you can't really describe - it's absolutely amazaing. Its a shame its only for a few seconds. You feel like a super-hero cos you can fly, you can bench press with 1 finger.
2. Is there a certain type of trinket or souvenir you pick up when you travel abroad?
Yeah the cheesier the better!
3. What is your favourite pass-time when you are not globetrekking the world?
ANIME!!! And Photography... and a secret indulgence... I like playing computer games. I have a very good computer... I like those cheesy time-managment games.
4. What are some of the best dive spots you've been to?
Phuket - it really left an impression there. I actally went there to dive non-stop and take 2 licences: the basic and the advanced for Globe Trekker Florida & The Bahamas. I just ate, drank and lived diving, studied diving theory every night. 3rd night we were there I was so tired, trying to study sitting on chair which... I fell off! Then I woke up and found myself on the floor.
Thank you Cynthia! I really love talking to people who love Globe Trekker as much as I do. I hope it works out for you |

Oh crap - I missed the chat.
Wah.
I forgot when it was on, and was relying on those emails that you get whenever someone responds to a thread you've commented on. Hey Helen/admin, do you know why I didn't get the emails? Have I been bad?
Anyway, it was an interesting chat to read through. Many of the questions I would have had were asked by other posters anyway, so that was cool.
Maybe it's just me, but I get the feeling Lavinia likes Anime. (I'd like to know whether she also likes Manga.) |

Hey that's a shame! Not sure why you didn't get an alert - could be because you need to add a message to the thread then check the "Notify me when a reply is posted" tick box to get notified when people respond.
Yep, Lavinia LOVES anime - don't know if she likes Manga too, will drop her a line and ask her. |

And the answer from Lavinia is...
"Yes! Indeed, some of the best anime is all thanks to fantastic-super-wonderful-truly-original manga. And yes, I like both anime and manga very very much. I would be really bored-and-eating-my-toe-nails without them. The ideal situation would be me being able to read manga is its original language of Japanese script. Working on it. Help." |

Thanks for that Helen. I thought she might be a fan of manga.
I got the notification email for these responses, so all's good. (I think what happened is I got an earlier email that I accidentally deleted before visiting the site, thus putting the notifications on hold.)
Who's next on the chat line-up?! |

Has Justine gone her separate ways w/Pilot Guides and is doing other things now, or will she be doing other shows in the future. I think the last one she did was the Venice City guide show last year....will she be one of the up coming people joining the live chat? |
