|
|
Well after just reading in the Asia Cafe forum about shark fins soup I thought I might start a debate, or discussion about sustainability in travel shows.
From my experience most travellers are pretty environmentally concious people who are aware of current issues and whats going on in the world.
I also thought this was generally reflected in the content of travel shows.
So I'm wondering does Pilot Guides have a policy on this type of thing?
Would a presenter eat Tiger thing for example, or would this be a no no (shark fin soup to me is just as bad as this)?
Does the crew take trains where possible or use planes and fly first class?
I think that just as important as the response from the admin is the response from this community. Would we like the shows discussed here to reflect what seems to me to be common sensibility of travellers?
If Pilot Guides doesn't have a policy, and we think they should, I suspect we could exert a little pressure and win them over |

| I don't think there should have any policy except based on laws and regulations. |

Hmmm...
So you'd have no problem with a GT presenter smoking dope on camera in an Amsterdam cafe ?
Or stoning an animal or two at a religous festival in Spain ?
Prodding a dancing bear in E Europe ?
I would, even though these are legal activities. Not all laws or regulations are sensible.
I am sure there are other examples.
GT has to use its discretion as to what is responsible.
Laws and regulations do not define the boundaries of reasonable behaviour. They never have, and they never will.

In response to your "smart" comments...common sense...I'm sure the production crew possess these attributes...

I wanna smoke dope on camera. Just kidding (please don't close thread b/c of my dumb joke). Seriously, I wanted to suggest again something you all had a vote about last year for the next Latin America ep, which I think could tie in to this topic's title. I suggest that you do an ep on the Brazilian Amazon, but starting out of Sao Paolo asap. You haven't done SP and it's the biggest city on the continent and most industrialized south of the Rio Grande so it's LONG overdue. And extending that into the amazon seems like a no brainer in terms of some form of ecotourism. There's so damn much to see and do, you could really promote the idea of the region's importance to the whole world ecologically and I think it's long past time GT moved on this idea. I would love to see Estelle Bingham or Neil Gibson host, but as is I'd request you get Megan, Ian or Adela to do it since they're all gung ho travelers! Cheers. |

| I posted this on another thread, but I think alot of Treks eps (if not most of the series) tries to be eco-centric, from the few eps I've seen anyway. I just watched Elis Nevitt's Amazon Trek ep (which I HIGHLY recommend) and it's all about ecotourism. |

I have never been to an eco-lodge unfortunately but I am fortunate to have been in many interesting and beautiful places. I believe that my passion for being “green” both at home and abroad has helped to reduce my ecological footprint and has given me a greater appreciation of nature’s wonders and a better understanding of cultural heritage and traditions.
Plus, Green is so sexy!
Me with my solar radio (I was hosting a solar hot dog cooker competition at work hence the chef's outfit!)
I was also a member of the Queen's Solar Car Team for four years. LOVE IT.

ragingpaseo, that was the solar car team and I with our solar car "Mirage" in 2001 in Chicago near the start line. We were setting up for a group photo of all the teams and cars.

| Not just pilot but all of us should be eco conscious. And as Pilot has the power to broadcast it should take the initiative. Look at Canon or Olympus. Just see how they have increased their customer base just by promoting endangered species. Today ecofriendly is the IN thing . And so should pilot be. |

Totally agree - not just from a marketing perspective but also because we have and always will promote responsible travel which respects local people, their communities, and the environment. |
