Some qs for holly....

1] What was your most embarrising moment in front of the camera, but which got edited out later?

2] How was your experience working for National Geographic today?

3] How do you deal with people ogling you all the time, in countries like India?

4] Which is the most unorganised place you have visited, in the course of your travels?

5] What would you like to be if not a traveler?

1] What was your most embarrising moment in front of the camera, but which got edited out later?
Falling off the back of a jeep while doing a piece to camera.

2] How was your experience working for National Geographic today?
Positive but brief as I believe that particular program - "National Geographic Today," a daily NG news program of sorts - was on the air only for a year or two. My favorite stories I did for them took place on the Caspian Sea in Iran - A look into the high stakes, environmentally perilous, and politically infused caviar industry. The experience was equal parts Old Man and the Sea and Andromeda Strain.

Working for the National Geographic enterprise has been a pleasure... the Treks in the Wild World series broadcasts on National Geographic International, fyi. Also, I write a monthly column for National Geographic Adventure magazine.

3] How do you deal with people ogling you all the time, in countries like India?
Well, if you mean attention for being the 'other' or different, I think kindness and patience are a good response. We're on their turf, after all. It's natural to stare at something very different that saunters into our space. If you mean lewd men - those pesky fellas get the same kind of response they get from me in the U. S (ignore them, or if the situation requires, an acid tongue lashing). Traveling with a film crew does 'protect' one from some of the unwanted attention from men that women can receive on the road.

4] Which is the most unorganised place you have visited, in the course of your travels?
The developing world can feel chaotic to those of us from the 'first world.' Show me a westerner who isn't slightly baffled by India! But there are other levels/manners of organization that we, as visitors, cannot hope to even see, much less understand. In my book I wrote of India: "If I keep looking long enough I am sure a pattern will emerge."

Maybe part of the magic of travel is handing yourself over to that chaos and seeing what you can learn.

5] What would you like to be if not a traveler?
Maybe a novelist. You'd still be able to explore and tell stories... but would have fewer airport security hassles, and parasites.

1. Where are you most anxious to visit either on of off tv?
Tibet. Also, Patagonia. Maybe Graceland?

2. Where do you call home?
Brooklyn, NY is my base these days.

3. Is there ANY WHERE in the world you would like to call home?
I get a little twitchy at those kind of commitments, but, I've always had a fantasy about a cabin in Montana.

4. What would you like to see most emphasized on a GT episode if you had your way?
I like the cultural stories and meeting great characters - and through them coming to understand the spirt of a country. From a 'program content' perspective I don't think things like bungie jumping are as interesting. However, personally, they can be good fun. Just last month while shooting in Colorado I got to live out my life-long rodeo fantasy.
I'll never be a team rope champion but I loved trying.

5. Have you been told to avoid talking about political situations in a country your visit?
No. But I've produced/directed docs in Cuba and Iran and other places that require some political tightrope walking. Every day you run up against sensitive situations in which you choose your words carefully in order to fulfill the larger mission of the program.

Welcome Holly:)

I want to ask...

1. Do you have your favourite country and why?
2. How many countries have you visited?
3. Have you ever been in Poland?
4. What is your next plan connected with travelling?

Have a nice day,
Gwadelupe(:

1. Do you have your favourite country and why?
I don't really. I love exploring the elements of every new country I get to go to.

2. How many countries have you visited?
Umm. Well. Now you've inspired me.... I will count and report back.

3. Have you ever been in Poland?
Yep, but not since I was 7 when my family travelled around E. and W. Europe and the then Soviet Union in a blue van for a year. I remember being so absolutely thrilled to cross into Poland after a tough stretch in the USSR....Poland had Coca Cola! This is what matters to a 7 year old. This was the early 70s.

4. What is your next plan connected with travelling?
I'm hoping it will be Tibet - the permission is iffy for journalists around these Olympic times.

Hi Holly,

I'd like to know...

1. How did you learn to fish?

2. What's the biggest fish you ever caught?

3. Favourite fishing spots in the world?

Look forward to chatting tomorrow!

1. How did you learn to fish?My grandparents taught me. I used to travel from Illinois to Oregon every summer and meet them for a fishing trip.

2. What's the biggest fish you ever caught?
30 pound tuna in the Pacific. (Remember, women don't lie about the size.)

3. Favourite fishing spots in the world?
Montana. It was a thrill to cast for Tiger fish on the Zambezi recently. I'd love to have the opportunity to fish in Patagonia.

Also... check out my books about fishing:

Hey Holly - How's it going? Here's my questions for ya!

- Do you plan to work on any more books?

- Did you ever think of trying your hand at fiction?

- What's you favourite travel book?

- I read in one of your interviews you said: "You don't have to be an 18-year-old with a backpack in order to have epiphanies that lead to life changes." So what's the most important epiphany you experienced in your life?

- Tell us about filming in Cuba. How did you find the music and the people?

- Is it true you ate mice on a stick in Globe Trekker: Zambia & Malawi? What's that taste like?

Thanks so much Holly!

- Do you plan to work on any more books?
Yes am starting one now. It's another non-fiction book that mixes politics and adventure.

- Did you ever think of trying your hand at fiction?
It crosses my mind mostly when I'm wracking my brain (or scrambling through my notes) trying to remember the details of a particular conversation/event/experience for a story I am writing. It would be so much easier to write fiction! ( I know, I know, it's not...)

- What's you favourite travel book?
I don't read all that many travel books. I gravitate more toward the fiction/literature of the region I'm visiting. Going to New Zealand? I read The Bone People. Travelling in Africa? How about Nervous Conditions by Tstsi Dangarembga. That said, in terms of globalist/travel writers I am a big fan of Pico Iyer's work.

Travelling through the Sahara in Niger with Tuareg nomads on salt caravan.

Boarding a plane all alone, when I was maybe 4, headed out for my first fishing trip....

- Which explorer (dead or alive) do you most admire?
I'm currently exploring the nooks and crannies of Alexandra David-Neel's life. She was a traveler, singer, pilgrim, and writer - among many other things. She lived from 1848 - 1949.

- Have you ever been to the North or South Pole?
Nope. But I'd like to very much.

- What's your favorite way to travel, by boat, canoe, horseback, on foot?
Horse.

- Which Adventure Diva travel shows have you worked on?
All of them. I wrote/directed/ep'd and hosted the series. Check out www.AdventureDivas.com

- Best dive you ever did?
Off the coast of Borneo for GlobeTrekker/Treks in a Wild World. Unforgettable!

Hello, i'm french so please forget my faults ! Molly,T've seen on a video about zambia and kenya ! In this film, you had met a doctor who tell you that you have mousse in your stomach. Does this information changes anything in your life and how ? whtat did you think about african medecine ?

Thanks you for your answer !

Hatshepsut

He told me I had foam in my stomach but that it wouldn't be a problem for a couple of years. So I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it was either a mis-diagnosis or a benign condition... African medicine? I was fascinated but confused by the experience. Our time with the medicine man was all too brief.

Hi Holly! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us today. I really enjoy your episodes and I hope you continue to host many more in the future.

I have a couple questions that I would like to ask you:

1. Is there a certain type of trinket or souvenir you pick up when you travel abroad?

2. What city or country was featured in your showreel? Why did you choose that particular location and what did you do?

3. Any words of inspiration for fans of the show who would like to be a Globetrekker host? Smile

Thank you for answering my questions. Good luck with all your projects and safe travels. Take care and keep smiling always Smile

Cynthia

1. Is there a certain type of trinket or souvenir you pick up when you travel abroad?
I always pick up a note book or journal made in the country itself. Say a school notebook in Peru or an elephant dung journal (I picked one of these up in Zambia) - it serves as both a keepsake and a way to record your memories from the trip.

2. What city or country was featured in your showreel? Why did you choose that particular location and what did you do?
I didn't have one exactly but a documentary I made in Cuba was seen by Pilot's executive producer - Ian Cross. So that's how I became introduced to the fantastic Globe Trekker series.

3. Any words of inspiration for fans of the show who would like to be a Globetrekker host? Smile
Travel light, keep your sense of humour and get comfortable with the unexpected!
