Generally speaking, the monsoon season dictates the best time to visit Thailand; the northern hemisphere summer is time for heavy rain and cloudy weather on the west coast of the country (Phuket and Khao Lak can be rained out at this time) while the east side in the Gulf of Thailand are generally calmer. The central region has heavy showers in the afternoon, with sun the rest of the day. If you want the most stable weather, come between Nov and March, though its often crowded, prices are high and accommodation is booked (the reverse is true for the summer) If you are hate hot weather, dont come in April or May; the temperatures can reach the high 30's C and the countryside is dusty.
As for the best beach, it depends on your personality: want complete isolation? Try the limited accommodation options at the Similans, which is a national park; for non stop beach partying, try Koh Phangan, in the Gulf of Thailand, where Full Moon parties are all the rage. Somewhere in between in Phi Phi; choose your hotel carefully and you can stay in an isolated part, while taking a long tailed boat into the thick of it for parties and nightlife. |
