I do! I have about 50 dvds and I am still ordering new ones. I wish all of them were in DVD format though, since I don't have a regular VHS player.

Kati, I bought my first DVD a year ago and got into it right away. This is my favorite travel series. This year I've been to 12 countries, so watching these DVDS is so much fun and gives me new ideas. I really think I have a travel bug. Laughing

Dear admin,

Do you know if any of the videos in VHS format will be transferred to DVD format eventually? I would love to buy Pakistan, Madagascar, Tanzania etc dvds but they are all in vhs format. I would buy all of them once they are converted and I am sure a lot of people would too. Thank you

That's actually something that you can do it yourself. If you have the proper hardware, you can connect your VCR to your PC and burn into DVD...

I am sure there are ways to do it, but I am not that good with technology, so it will probably take me too much time figuring out how to do it. I just thought it would be nice if some of the VHS shows were converted into DVD.

Hi Guys - Sorry to butt in here but... burning our DVDs is technically copyright infringement. Shocked

But, on a brighter note, if there are any shows you'd like to see on DVD - just drop us a line and I'll pass on to our production guys. Cool

I would really like the whole ultimate Africa 8 set for now. I am going to Tanzania for honeymoon this august, so it would be incredibly nice to watch dvd on it. I am also fascinated by Africa in general. So if possible I would like to order Globe Trekker: Ultimate AFRICA 8 video set (format: NTSC only) in DVD format.

Thank you so much

LOL..i can't believe you just suggested that. And this came from a forum moderator.. Razz Razz ..opps

Back on topic, i have about 20 DVDs and counting..and 3 of the music CDs. Most of my DVDs came from those themed sales the GT store had awhile back...ie, 5 South american Shows, or 3 European show pack...etc. Good way to collect them.

I collected about all of Ian's and Justine's stuff; I would definitely buy them again if they were on DVD; but sorry to say Helen I have copied episodes that were broadcast on my DVR! But the quality is not the same as when you buy a DVD. I know you have to update the trips but I love the older stuff that is "vintage" Ian and Justine!! Really fun stuff. But maybe include some "outtakes"?????

Copyright infringement is damaging to our business which means we make less revenue and - as a consequence - finance and produce fewer shows. By early Fall this year we will have encoded our entire catalogue for www.GlobeTrekkerChannel.tv. We will also be offering 7-day downloads (3 devices) and whole raft of Globe Trekker music tracks. As for outtakes, we're researching our back catalogue right now so you can expect to see those appearing on our channel in the near future.

Converting a vhs to a dvd is not copyright infringement! As long as she uses it for her own personal use there is nothing wrong. Did you notice the "buy" part in her response?

I also don't know about episodes that are broadcast on the PBS or other channel..I mean my cable provider gave me a digital recorder to record shows on. It is simple just to burn it on a DVD recorder for personal use, so once any show is broadcast, is recording that copyright infringement? If so then most of my movie collection is bad! I know it is illegal to re-broadcast or sell them or anything for a public audience, but for personal use I'm pretty sure there is no infringement.
IMHO Cool Cool Cool

Personally I would love to have GT as part of my humongous DVD library. But, IMO a DVD needs more than just a straight transfer of just the show to the DVD with a few menus and chapter selection to make it worth the money for me. As I mentioned in the past, some cool special features will make me more inclined to purchase them.

Honduras & El Salvador,Colorado and Utah,Malawi & Zambia,Spanish Islands, most of the multiple host episodes like great natural wonders or Great Journeys: Planes, Trains & Automobiles or Galleons, Pirates & Treasure Special etc, etc. I am also a member of globetrekker.tv. Even though its has most episodes some episodes available on dvd didnt make it there. Web TV is good for inaccessible customers Very Happy . But its not the same like actually holding the dvd in your own hands. Crying or Very sad And you also cant gift web content. Pilot should keep manufacturing physical media and at the same time increase its web archive.

Sorry to reply to something off topic..... but regarding the whole copyright infringement issue above......

1] Converting old VHS tapes which contain copyrighted content to DVDs or any other media format is legal if the new media is not used for broadcasting, mass duplication, raising money for charitable causes, or screening at public gatherings. This concept is called as Generation Upgrade. But you should have at least one license for the media you are converting. That means that you should own the VHS tape you are converting.

2] Recording TV shows or films etc., from analog or digital cable TV is legal if the recorded content is used only for personal viewing and not for broadcasting, mass duplication, raising money for charitable causes, or screening at public gatherings. The concept of Timeshifting works entirely on storing copyrighted material for personal viewing on personal storage devices without prior permission from the respective copyright holder. In this case you should own the cable TV connection, storage device, and playback device which you use for recording TV.

For more information in detail check out Revision 6, Bill H.R.2281 for the 105th Congress, Digital Millennium Copyright Act, passed unanimously by the house and senate of the government of the United States of America.

For the collector:thanks for the definition of the copyright thing: I was pretty sure that most of the private collection I own and copied from broadcast couldn't be illegal, otherwise the VCR and DVR companies would be out of business!!!maybe it's different in other countries?????

Regarding Munizera's query: DMCA is only followed by U.S.A, U.K, Germany. Copyright laws are toughest in U.S.A but better enforced in the U.K. All other countries follow the Berne convention which is more lenient than the DMCA . So the 2 points that I mentioned can be applied to all countries.

yup those videos on youtube are a violation of pilots copyright. Not the ones recorded for personal viewing. But I don't think pilot has the resources to do anything about it. Proving ones copyright ownership and then suing someone for violating it is a very time consuming process. you tube is just the tip of the iceberg. Pilots videos are everywhere on the scene. the best way to avoid piracy is to make shows that people are compelled to buy out of a sense of gratitude.

Perfectly said... gratitude and loyalty. I hate when one of my friends tries to get me to view a pirated copy of anything. It just doesn't sit well; feels like cheating.

I found out one more interesting thing in the DMCA. So I will post it as point no.3

3] It is legal to make a backup copy of copyrighted encrypted media to prevent loss of data by harm to the original copy due to unforseen circumstances; without prior permission from the respective copyright holder.

In plain language, if you buy a copyrighted DVD, you are allowed to decrypt its contents and store them on another DVD so as not to lose this film, if by any chance your original DVD becomes unfit to play. If the original becomes unfit to play, your backup disc becomes the original and you can make a another backup as a precaution. But you are not allowed to use both the original and backup at the same time on different playback devices.

Yes we do! We are active members of YouTube's CVP (Content Verification Program) and regularly "police" the site for non-authorised material. We also regularly check the web - an ongoing and extremely time-consuming process - and take preventative action to protect our copyright.

Obviously, it's impossible to stop all piracy given the sheer size of the Internet and number of websites streaming video. However, we try to be as vigilant as we can simply because the more people give our content away for free, the less content we are able to monetize, and the less shows we are able to produce for you to watch. So... if you see any pirated Globe Trekkers out there please be sure to drop us a line!

Well.... different techniques are used to encrypt dvds. Most studios use the cheapest i.e. macrovision and CSS. Big studios like disney use more expensive, but more hard to break "enforced sector read error" systems.
But as they say....a hacker is smarter than a coder.

But anyway....even though decrypting dvds is legal for point no. 3, due to a paragraph in the DMCA about "circumvention measures", and this site being owned by a studio itself, aaaand all users on this forum agreeing to abide to its rules and regulations before signing up....I cannot disclose how to do it on THIS particular forum.

But dont worry...its child's play...just do a google search and u will know how...... But remember using it for anything other than the use mentioned in pt no 3, is illegal

Getting back to the topic, I got my hands on a very very old GT tape the other day . The manufacturing date says it was made in 1996 . And when I played it, I was astonished by something very unique about it. It still had the original opening theme which still had the words "Lonely Planet". And the theme's a bit different than the newer one which has the "Globetrekker" titlecard. Surprised

Looks Fabulous Very Happy

Hello Collector! I wasn't aware that this forum was even active anymore but its good to hear from you! I hope you've been doing some travelling of your own because I sure have! I haven't seen what Justine or Ian are up to; although it seems as though Ian is very big Asia and does shows and speaking engagements there. He tweets, but his website isn't kept up to date except for pics and his wonderful artwork, which I wish he'd publish and sell.
Hardly ever watch GT anymore since it has taken on this new format.

@munizera01: Yeah, Ian's been doing some new shows, but they are not really good. They sorely lack the Ian Ritchie Music. I didn't know that GT had taken up a new format, since TLC dropped it.

Series15 looks delicious! Bangladesh, Paraguay/Uruguay etc most welcome. Shame things died down here so much. Sure presenters eventually come and go and formats change but these listings certainly seem committed to the ethos of Globetrekker. The oldies with Ian, Megan & Justine will always hold a special place for the long time fans but i am certainly excited by the details of series 14/15 also. Miss the buzz around here but hey bring on the shows!
