Background to the course

Type: Desert

Landscape:
Sand for miles around. It's amazing to visit at sunrise or twilight for blood red or hazy purple views of the city skyline against the palms and pale sandy dunes.

Course facts
- Dubai Country Club has always been host to the Dubai's Men's Open, Dubai's oldest championship, dating back to 1976.
- While other golf courses in Dubai need up to a million gallons of water a day to stay green, this desert course only requires 10,000 gallons a week.
- Dubai CC is the region's oldest golf club - even though it only opened in 1971. It currently has over 500 members.
- The club was named in Golf World as one of the world's most unique golfing destinations.

Playing the Course

Playing off the tees, two lines of pegs denote the edges of the fairway. Land within those markers and you can place your ball on your mat and play on as normal, but landing outside means you have to play the ball as it lies, which is invariably off the sandy scrub ground. Once the green, or rather brown, is reached, you putt onto a mixture of sand and second hand engine oil compressed with rollers. This surface holds a pitching ball surprisingly well; although the putt is quite slow it will run true. After putting, the golfer is expected to brush around the hole with brooms to smooth out footprints for the players behind. Players have to contend with numerous dhubs - burrows dug by desert lizards.
