Background to the
Stadium Course
Architect:
Designed by Pete Dye in 1981, the course now ranks 32nd
in the top 100 clubs in the United States. |
|
Type: Resort
Landscape:
Although the layout has been softened (made "more
fair"), its firm and small undulating greens and
angular fairways require a precise aim. The amphitheater
mounding alongside the holes creates a sense of intimacy
whilst at the same time making players feel like they
are performers on a grand stage. Water comes in to play
on almost every hole.
Course facts:
- The Stadium Course is the home of the PGA Tour's member
players and site of The Players Championship, the crown
jewel of the PGA Tour schedule.
- One of the first courses to host both world class
championships and be open to members of the general
public, Sawgrass is credited with opening golf in America
to the wider public.
- Sawgrass was one of the first to combine golf with
a vacation resort. It now hosts more than 40,000 rounds
per year.
- Sawgrass staff estimates that 120,000 to 150,000 balls
are recovered from the water surrounding the dreaded
Island 17th hole each year. |
