World Golf Guides: Scotland

image: Gullane Golf Course, East Lothian, Scotland

Wherever you travel in Scotland the sense of history is awe-inspiring, the golf is challenging, the views are stunning, and the experience is incomparable to anywhere else in the world. You feel a tangible sense of a grand history when playing every course: Mary Queen of Scots played golf here four centuries ago, and today's game as we know it started in St. Andrews. Even within this relatively small nation the varied course types, changeable weather, and the technical and strategic challenges that they offer are incredible. From classic links courses to magnificent world-renowned golf resorts, there are also hundreds of parkland, heathland and moorland courses which are situated by lochs and, in the Highlands, on the foothills of snowcapped mountains. Some say that Scotland is golf, and it can certainly be regarded as the national game. The locals will welcome anyone with an interest in their game, and are only too eager to discuss all golf matters over a customary "wee dram" of whiskey.

Other Recommended Courses

Downfield Golf Club
Situated halfway between St Andrews and Carnoustie, and with green fees at just a third of its illustrious neighbours, Downfield was described by five times Open champion Peter Thomson as: "one of the finest inland courses I have played in the world. "

Royal Troon
The scene of numerous British Open championships and the only course to be patronized by Queen Elizabeth II, Troon is famous for its par 3 8th hole, the "postage stamp", which can be impossible to hit in the ever-present winds.

North Berwick Golf Club
Internationally renowned, North Berwick is the classic links course on the east coast. It is best known for its unbelievably difficult 15th - a par-3 hole named Redan which is said to be the golf hole most copied around the world.

The Westin Turnberry Resort Golf Courses
With views towards Ireland and the famous Ailsa Rock and Mull of Kintyre, Turnberry is a class act. Although very expensive, Ailsa is a classic links championship course.
