Background to
the course
Architect:
Originally opened in 1975, the front nine holes were
designed by Brit Frank Pennick.
Type:
Parkland
Landscape:
Constructed on what was once swampy, crocodile-infested
outback, the front nine covers heavily wooded hills
and valleys, and the contrasting back nine is a plain
with open fairways and zoysia grass leading to Jurong
Lake.
Course facts:
- The course and its facilities have improved significantly
in the three decades since the club was opened, originally
constructed as a nine-hole course at a cost of S $4
million.
- Night golf was introduced to Jurong in 1992 and has
become hugely popular ever since.
- Several major tournaments have taken place here including
the Singapore Open Amateur Golf Championship
(1997), Singtel Ericsson Singapore Open (1997)
and the Alcatel Singapore Open (2001).
Playing the course
at night
In essence, the only difference between day and night
golf is the time of the day that it is played. Players
do however have to get used to the difference lighting
conditions as the course is lit by stadium style floodlights.
Night golf is especially popular in Singapore among
business golfers, who indulge after a hard day's work
in the office. Amid cool surroundings, landscaped with
lush greenery and lakes, the night golfer is in a different
world. Being away from the daytime burning heat of Singapore's
equatorial weather also means that golfers can play
a longer, more rigorous game.
