Background to the
course
Architect:
The Club has three nine-hole courses - Vanda, Aranda
and Dendro - designed by Chris Pitman
Type:
Parkland
Landscape:
Gentle rolling hills and beautiful orchid-filled flower
beds and the nearby reservoir makes this one of the
most beautiful courses on the island.
Course facts:
" One of only two courses in Singapore that offer
night golfing
" The 27-hole course played host to the Singapore
Open 1999
" This international championship course was designed
with the late Singapore president Mr Ong Teng Cheong's
personal guidance to be uniquely different, making a
feature of the orchid - Singapore's national flower.
" The 160-bay driving range was opened in March
1993 and is one of the biggest driving ranges in South
East Asia. It features a state-of-the-art ball retrieval
system which uses a smart card for automatic tee-up.
Playing the course
at night
In essence, the only difference between day and night
golf is the time of the day that it is played. Players
do however have to get used to the difference lighting
conditions as the course is lit by stadium style floodlights.
Night golf is especially popular in Singapore among
business golfers, who indulge after a hard day's work
in the office. Amid cool surroundings, landscaped with
lush greenery and lakes, the night golfer is in a different
world. Being away from the daytime burning heat of Singapore's
equatorial weather also means that golfers can play
a longer, more rigorous game.
The fairways of the Aranda are easy and wide but some
huge, undulating greens make putting a challenge. The
Vanda Course is the shortest but easily the most challenging
with its numerous water hazards, making accuracy on
approach that much more important.
