Background to the
golf course
Architect:
Harry S. Colt
Type:
Heathland
Landscape:
Although this is seaside golf, it is not links golf.
The course is set in a heathland nature reserve, decorated
with a profusion of gorse, heather and rare flora and
fauna.
Course facts:
The club was founded in 1892 and was modified at the
turn of the 20th century by one of the all time great
architects, Harry Colt. Enid Blyton, the legendary
writer of children's books, including the Famous Five,
and her husband Dr Darrell-Waters, once owned the club.
No doubt the surroundings inspired her writings.
Playing the course
A visit here is a must for all golfers. The 18-hole
Purbeck Championship Course is undoubtedly an
exciting test for even the most accomplished golfer
with its spectacular views and fantastic high vantage
points. The course is built on heathland and set in
a nature reserve where many rare plants can be seen
as well as rare birds - including the Dartford Warbler.
The course is well manicured and abounds with heather
and gorse - with incredible views at every hole - To
the south across the Solent is the Isle of Wight, to
the east across Poole Bay is Bournemouth, to the north
across Poole Harbour is Brownsea Island lying to the
west, the Purbeck Hills. This is a fine place to enjoy
a leisurely round of golf, particularly in the summer
when the weather is great and temperatures can rival
those enjoyed by many places on the European continent.
