Background to the course

The golf course is made up of three nine-hole golf courses: La Mer, Le Foret, and Le Manoir. The original, and arguably the most challenging, is the Harry Colt-designed La Mer Course. It is a Scottish Links mapped out along the coastline, where the weather will do its very best to put you off your game.

Architect:
The La Mer course, known also as Stoke Poges, was designed by Harry Shapland Colt. It opened in July 1909 and received immediate acclaim. The course has stood the test of time, and is considered today one of the finest parkland courses in Southern England.

Type:
Parkland and links

Landscape:
The exceptionally high quality of the greens, which have been consistently maintained, are a particular feature of the course, however, Stoke Park is about more than just a great course - traditions, events, competitions and a great atmosphere created over a century make this course world-class.

Course facts:
- Iconic Stoke Park Club is one of England's most beautiful and most famous country estates, and as such has featured in many classic feature films.

- From 1066, the estate was inherited in a direct line of descent for 515 years until it was sold to the Crown in 1581 to pay the outstanding debts of Henry Hastings, the Third Earl of Huntingdon. The Commander-in-Chief of Henry VIII's army, Hastings was responsible for the manor's refurbishment in 1555, part of which can still be seen today.

- John Penn (1760 - 1834) - a scholar, poet and prolific patron of architecture - was responsible for most of what can still be seen at the Club today. A major landowner, Penn was awarded £130,000 in compensation after he was forced to sell his family's 26-million-acre estate in Pennsylvania by the new US Government. He decided to spend much of it on Stoke Park.

- The Mansion was designed by James Wyatt, architect to King George III, who worked on the development of the house and monuments from 1790 to 1813. The historic parkland is the product of two geniuses of the eighteenth century, landscape architects 'Capability' Brown and Humphry Repton, who designed the landscape seen today.

- The estate was used as a private residence until 1908, when 'Pa' Lane Jackson, founder of the Corinthian Sporting Club, purchased the estate, turning it into Britain's finest country club. Harry S. Colt was engaged to design the golf course.

Playing the course
Playing Stoke Park Club is a delight. It isn't physically demanding, but there are several holes that mentally test golfers of all standards. The famous Par 3 7th hole is considered to be Colt's finest ever creations, and is the model for the famous 12th at the Augusta National (part of Amen Corner).
