A giraffe on the fairway of the Hans Merensky Course |
|
Our adventure golfer Ian Cross journeys to a
great undiscovered destination for the intrepid traveler
and golfer alike - South Africa. First up he visits
the Hans Merensky Golf Club where you can quite
literally combine the country's number one attraction,
safari, with golf. Ian comes face to face with giraffes
and zebras strolling on the course!
Five hours drive south from the club, but a million
miles away in terms of lifestyle, is Soweto, the most
famous township in South Africa. Here Ian visits the
Soweto Country Club which was the only place
black South Africans could play golf during the apartheid
era. Now, blacks and whites play there side by side.
He then visits a moving reminder of these times, the
Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg. |

After a stay at the trendy Melrose Arch Hotel,
Ian is off to the world famous Sun City, a leisure
complex built in the middle of the desert. Here he plays
the tricky Gary Player Country Club with a caddy
of 25 years' experience; South African caddies are considered
among the best in the world.
After a flight down to Cape Town, Ian takes a ride
to the vineyards of Stellenbosch to indulge in
one of his favourite pastimes - wine tasting - before
playing the Pearl Valley Country Club. It's a
truly stunning way to end his journey through one of
golf's most exciting destinations.
