Kick Back Party
The weekly fish market is the gourmet highlight of Hamburg
and a must in anybody's itinerary. It kicks off at 4am on
a Sunday morning, packed by seven and at 10am, it's all over
- so you have to get there early. Either that, or stop off
after a night out on the town for a hearty breakfast, as many
weary revellers do. You can't beat a nice wet fish after a
night on the tiles. Many are still raving and drinking sekt
by opening time. Fabulous!
The green iron constucted market surrounds the central hall,
from where it spreads out along the banks of the river. The
shouting and banter of traders competes with the cacophony
of a local band, creating quite a rowdy atmosphere. Punters
are merrily stuffing their mouths with pickled fish dishes
and beer whilst making their way around the myriad stalls.
Top Treats
A must try of the fish delights on offer is smoked eel.
Visually, it's probably the ugliest thing you've ever seen,
but the taste is a wonderful delicate smoky flavour. As well
as the obvious fish (more varieties than you can shake a kipper
at), there are also other foodstuffs available, such as fruit,
sausages and livestock and clothes.
