Megan McCormick visits the most
densely populated of the 17,000 Indonesian Islands.
Beginning in Borobudur, a three
temple complex made of volcanic rock dating back
to the 9th Century. Some 3000 reliefs depicting
the life and parables of Buddha, 504 different
Buddha statues and some incredible scenery await
Megan in this Islamic area. Leaving the spiritual
site behind she heads on to the busy former capital
Yogyakarta, risking life and
limb in the traffic on a tricycle rickshaw, and
enjoying the New Year festivals with a ouija
ritual with the locals. Another change of scenery
takes Megan to the Ujung Kulon National
Park, 77 square miles of waters and jungle,
and some beautiful beaches. Finally a 2 hour boat
ride and the trek concludes at the Anak
Krakatau Volcano. Famous for its mighty
eruption in 1883, the volcano also boasts some
incredibly beautiful diving in its surrounding
waters |
