These organic farming entrepreneurs have taken the act of producing unmeddled-with food to new heights — both undoing damage done by conventional farming methods, and addressing poverty, education, health and unnecessarily long supply chains. All in the name of a better future for all!

SEKEM Organic Farm, Egypt

While the largely arid landscapes of Egypt might not immediately spring to mind when we think of farming, irrigation and the fertile banks of the Nile and the Nile Delta have always afforded Egypt a healthy agriculture industry. However, these successes have taken a hit in recent years, owing to desertification issues and water pollution.

In a bid to turn Egypt’s agricultural fortunes around, one innovative organisation, SEKEM, has developed a very impressive model of farming, which also has wider socioeconomic development ambitions within its profit-making business — something referred to as social capitalism.

The name SEKEM itself is a transliteration of a hieroglyph meaning “vitality from the sun”. Alongside its various chemical-free farming operations, including fruit, vegetables and organic Egyptian cotton, SEKEM provides quality schooling, healthcare, and vocational training to its 2,000 employees, plus tens of thousands of local residents. SEKEM also donates 15 to 20 percent of its profits to social development.

Organic farming has proven to be remarkably effective in reversing the negative impact of agriculture on the environment, but for SEKEM, it doesn’t stop there. SEKEM seeks to combat the socioeconomic instability that arises from, among other things, the soil-depletion and pollution that occur from conventional farming methods.

SEKEM also opens its doors for agrotourism, offering a variety of activities along with accommodation to visitors from near and far!

Organik Dalat, Vietnam

Dr. Nguyen Ba Hung, one of Vietnam’s leading organic farming experts, founded Organik as an answer to the increasing importance and interest in food safety in Vietnam.

The 1980’s had seen a period of agricultural policies designed to incentivise food production, but which had some rather undesirable side effects on the farmers and the food. By the 1990’s, not only had the agro-chemicals being used had caused negative health effects on the farmers exposed to them, but they were also found to be contained within the crops at excessive levels, causing a number of health scares across the nation.

Organik was the first of its kind, and led the charge in educating and promoting the benefits of organic produce across Vietnam. The farm also became GAP (Switzerland) and HACCEP (netherlands) certified, allowing the farm to sell its produce internationally. Today, Organik mostly supplies hotels, restaurants and individual consumers in Vietnam.

Organik runs tours to both domestic and international visitors at its farm in Dalat, and has a popular farm and organic produce shop in Ho Chi Minh City.

Biorfarm, Italy

Italian agriculture innovators, Biorfarm, have utilised computer technology to take sustainable farming practices into the the next stratosphere. Cutting out the middlemen of the supply chain, Biorfarm partners consumers across Italy with independent organic farmers. Consumers get to eat fresh, local produce via a cost-effective farm-to-table transaction, and farmers get both a better price for their produce and the loyalty of local customers. Not only is eating local produce proven to be better for your health, but eating direct from the farm dramatically reduces its – and therefore the customer’s – carbon footprint.

Rodale, Penn., USA

New York entrepreneur J.I. Rodale started the farm in the 1930’s when he moved his manufacturing business out of the city and developed a keen interest in the healing powers of chemical-free soil and food. Having had health problems himself which he in turn claimed were imporved by the food he was producing, Rodale felt compelled to share his findings with the world.

Fast forward to today, and the Rodale Institute is headquartered on a 333-acre certified organic farm, complete with labs, classrooms, pastured hog facility, and more. The Institute is also partnered with other farms in Pennsylvania; has regional resource centres throughout the country; and still uses the original Rodale Farm to accommodate overnight guests of the institute.

The research-led institute also maintains partnerships with a number of US and foreign Universities including Pennsylvania State University, Cornell University, Michigan State University, University of Padova (Italy), Northeast Forestry University (China), South China Environmental Institute, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (China), and the Institute for Land Improvement and Grassland Farming (Poland).
