Johannesburg

Johannesburg

Having emerged out of a prominent gold mine, Johannesburg still extracts much of its wealth from the mineral industries. Since its humble beginnings, Johannesburg has emerged as one of South Africa’s most important economic and cultural centres, known for its abundance of museums and rich cultural diversities. Since its days as a hotbed of racial unrest in the era of Apartheid, tensions have cooled somewhat in recent years. It is less-visited than the more glamorous and beautiful destination of Cape Town but has its special sights, the most notable of which being the Cradle of Humankind, one of the world’s hotspots for fossil discoveries.
