Great Railway Journeys of Europe – Budapest to Warsaw

Historian and archetypal Englishman Julian Davison samples the delights of some of the most spectacular railway journeys in Europe.

This episode starts with Julian exploring The Hungarian capital Budapest. Discovering the many and varied influences on this great city he travels between Turkish baths and Jewish Synagogues on an antique underground railway.

Then he  jumps on a local train, the first of four, on an 11 hour expedition that see’s him heading towards Poland. He is following a medieval trade route via Bratislava, eventually arriving in the city of Krakow.

It is here that Julian really starts to discover the heart wrenching history of this countries Jewish community as he visits the Oskar Schindler factory and museum.

Julian then continues his journey on to Poland’s capital Warsaw, a city which is not quite all it appears to be. After touring the sites of the Warsaw Ghetto he finishes his expedition relaxing in the park at a Sunday afternoon Chopin concert.
