The Battle of Stanardsville in Virginia was a minor skirmish in the war but typical of the small battles which dotted its duration involving both infantry and cavalry. Led by General Custer, union troops were heading for Charlottesville but were overwhelmed by Confederate forces and were forced to retreat.
