Foreigners in China: No Vacancy

The Chinese Government has insisted that hotels no longer refuse to accept foreign visitors as it tries to re energise the tourist sector following the shutdown during Covid 19.

According to The Financial Times , hotels outside the major cities are continuing the practice which was prevalent during the Communist era of Mao Tse Tung. Then the Government feared foreign influence and spies and a sprawling network of police and informers implemented the policy.
The policy never entirely disappeared , with foreigners often being told by hotels there were no vacancies when in fact there were .With Covid 19 and the Government of President Xi ,the practice was re introduced as China shut off from the world .
For long periods of its history China has been closed off or isolated from the rest of the world and the monitoring of foreigners and their movements is a long standing cultural practice.
