Sri Lanka is a predominantly Buddhist country with a sizeable Tamil population, originally from nearby South India.

It was discovered by the Portuguese in search of valuable spices who found cinnamon here . The Dutch traded its huge population of Asian elephants and then the British imported Tamil workers to run tea plantations .
