Lost Ruins of the Maya

An indication of the remarkable number of ancient Maya cities that are likely to still remain undiscovered in remote Guatemalan jungle even today is how recently many of the most famous ancient Maya ruins have been discovered.

The now well-known, spectacular site of Aguateca, for example, wasn’t discovered until the mid-1950s.  Numerous other once great cities have been found much more recently, many of them using high-tech ground-penetrating lasers flown over the jungle in aircraft.

Scientists in the PACUNAM project responsible for these recent discoveries believe that the ancient Maya population may have been as much as 10 times larger than experts previously imagined.
