Palm Springs’ Famous Marilyn Monroe Sculpture
The Palm Springs Art Museum is probably most famous for its giant sculpture of Marilyn Monroe at its entrance by sculptor Seward Johnson.
Entitled Forever Marilyn the 26 foot high sculpture weighs 24,000 pounds – or ten tons.
The desert city claims to have discovered
Marilyn at a local racquet club , when in 1949 at the age of 22 she was discovered by a film agent. She came to the desert city frequently in the 1950s with her second husband , baseball star, Joe DiMaggio.
The museum also has an impressive collection of modern art , including pieces by Anish Kapoor and Ed Ruscha as well as a western art collection and works by Mexican artists.
