The Assassination of Yitzak Rabin

It’s more than 30 years since the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzak Rabin was assassinated in Tel Aviv , paying the ultimate price tor seeking a two state solution to the Israeli Palestine conflict.

Rabin had negotiated the Oslo accords setting the scene for the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank. He had banned the creation of new Jewish settlements there and was negotiating directly with Palestinian leader , Yasser Arafat, with the support of US President , Bill Clinton.

An exhibition at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid charts the trajic events of November 4 1995 when Rabin was gunned down by a right wing extremist after attending a peace rally in Tel Aviv.

Nationalists led by politicians such as Benjamin Netanyahu had bitterly opposed the Oslo Accords and had called tor them to be stopped by “any means”.

Three bullets in chest ended Rabin.”s life as he left the peace rally. A. Bloodstained copy of the anthem Song of Peace( Shir La Shalom) , pictured above, sung at the rally ,was found in his chest pocket A judge appointed to oversee the subsequent investigation commented that after the assassination “Israel will never be the same again“.
