Grenada: The Spice Island

Grenada, known as the “Spice Isle,” is famous for its lush landscapes, beautiful beaches, and rich culture. The Island of Spice is regarded as the most food obsessed of the Eastern Caribbean islands.Grenada is also famous for its beautiful private gardens. St. George

Grenada’s colonial capital St. George’s, is apparently the prettiest town in the Caribbean boasting colourful buildings and a picturesque harbour. Don’t miss the Fort George for panoramic views and the bustling market for local produce and spices. The market is fantastic and should be visited with a guide.

 

Wreck Diving

There is also the wreck of an Italian cruise ship which sank off the coast in 1961. Travel out to wreck in sailboat. (Called ‘Bianca C’ and it’s regarded as the best wreck dive in the Caribbean.

 

The Spice Island

Grenada is famously impregnated with the smell of nutmeg. Visiting a spice plantation provides insight into the island’s agricultural heritage. The Nutmeg Station at Gouyave, on Grenada’s north west coast is one of 19 which receives nutmegs from island farmers. Nutmeg is used by bakers, the pharmaceutical industry and as an ingredient in Coca Cola. Farmers receive a cash advance based on quality and weight and at the end of each year they receive a dividend based on the world price of nutmeg. The reddy coloured outer covering of the nutmeg is called mace, and is dried, ground and used to flavour sausages and cold meats – selling to Germany and the Netherlands.

Waterfall Hikes

The island is home to several beautiful waterfalls, with the Seven Sisters Falls being a popular choice. Hiking through the rainforest to reach these waterfalls offers breathtaking views and opportunities for swimming.

 

Grand Anse Beach

This stunning two-mile stretch of white sand beach is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. It’s one of the most popular beaches in Grenada and offers a vibrant atmosphere.
