Heraklion: Historic capital of Crete

Heraklion, the capital of Crete, is also a city rich in history and culture.

Crete has a complex and dramatic history stretching from its occupation by the Minoans, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans.

Heraklion was a major Venetian port surrounding by defensive walls several kilometres long finally breached by Ottoman forces after a 20 year siege in the late 17th century. The ruins of the walls are still here today.

2. Heraklion Archaeological Museum: This museum houses one of the most extensive collections of Minoan artifacts in the world, including pottery, jewelry, and frescoes.

3. Venetian Fortress (Koules): Located at the entrance of the old harbor, this fortress was built by the Venetians in the 16th century. It offers panoramic views of the sea and the city .The old city is also surrounded by several kilometres of old defensive walls .constructed by the Venetians.

4. Historical Museum of Crete: This museum focuses on the history of Crete from the early Christian period to the modern era, showcasing a wide range of artifacts, including paintings, textiles, and everyday objects.

5. Morosini Fountain: Situated in the city center, this beautiful Venetian fountain is a popular meeting point and features intricate sculptures and impressive architecture.

6. Church of St. Titus: This historic church, dedicated to the island’s patron saint, features beautiful frescoes from the Byzantine and Venetian periods . It was turned into a mosque during the Ottoman period.

Phaistos Palace: A full day trip south of Heraklion, this archaeological site is another important Minoan palace, known for its unique layout and significant archaeological finds, including the famous Phaistos disc.
