New LACMA Gallery Connects the World of Art
The new futuristic glass and concrete building housing the permanent collection of the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art (LACMA) has finally opened.
After 20 years of planning and construction costing more than 700 million dollars the Peter Zumthor designed museum building houses the David Geffen Galleries in a giant single elevated light filled floor which overlooks Hollywood and the city’s mid – Wilshire district.

The inaugural collection is global in nature, inspired by four major bodies of water – the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea- and the coastlines and inland cultures that are connected by them .

Exchange, transit ,time and translation underscore cultural intersections in a collection that span time and geography – a veritable history of art.


The collection’s diversity – taking in works from all continents mirrors the diversity and variety of Los Angeles itself .
