The German heritage of Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is a city in central Texas, known for its wineries. The city’s German heritage is on display at the Pioneer Museum, which features settlers’ homesteads and artifacts. In the nearby town square, Marktplatz, the Vereins Kirche is a replica of a 19th-century German church that once stood in the city.
The vast National Museum of the Pacific War features WWII exhibits, including a recreated combat zone.

The historic Main Street is the heart of the town, known for its strict “no chain store” policy in the national historic district
Here you also find Fort Martin Scott which was the first U.S. Army outpost established on the Texas frontier in 1848. Located in Fredericksburg, it now serves as a State Historic Site where visitors can explore a mix of original and reconstructed buildings from the mid-19th century
The fort was built to protect settlers and travelers as Texas expanded westward. It facilitated trade and maintained peace between settlers and various Native American tribes, including the Comanches.
Future Confederate General James Longstreet briefly commanded the post in the 1850s.The fort served as a Confederate headquarters and a temporary prisoner-of-war camp for women and children.
Fredericksburg is also the hub for over 100 wineriesin the surrounding area.
Wine Road 290 is a scenic stretch of U.S. Highway 290 is lined with dozens of vineyards, including popular spots like Grape Creek Vineyards and Becker Vineyards.
Downtown features more than 15 tasting rooms within walking distance of shops and hotels, such as Narrow Path Winery and Fiesta Winery.
To avoid driving, many visitors use hop-on-hop-off buses like the 290 Wine Shuttle or private trolley tours.
