Historic Hilltop Towns of Le Marche

Urbino, Ascoli Piceno, and Fermo lead the collection of historic hilltop towns in Italy’s Le Marche region, a territory celebrated for its intact Renaissance architecture, medieval defense walls, and dramatic landscape vistas. Unlike busier neighboring regions, Le Marche preserves an exceptionally authentic, slow-paced historical atmosphere.

Urbino, a Renaissance masterpiece Is a UNESCO World Heritage site that rivaled Florence during the 15th century. It features the grand Palazzo Ducale—which houses the National Gallery of the Marche—and is the birthplace of the painter Raphael.

Ascoli Piceno is reknowned for its stunning Piazza del Popolo, constructed almost entirely from polished grey travertine stone. The town features historic Romanesque towers, defensive walls, and an ancient Roman bridge.

Fermo, an ancient Tomsn hub, centers around the vast Piazza del Popolo. It sits directly above the Roman Cisterns, an enormous 1st-century AD underground water engineering complex.

Medieval Walled Towns

Le Marche also has a number of medieval walled towns.

Gradara is a flawless medieval fortress settlement surrounded by double crenellated walls. Its iconic castle is the legendary setting of Dante’s tragic lovers, Paolo and Francesca.

Corinaldo is famous for having some of the most complete and intimidating 14th-century defensive walls in Italy, complete with arrow slits and towers. It features a sweeping central staircase (La Piaggia) with a historic well.

Loreto is a fortress-like sanctuary town dominated by the Basilica della Santa Casa. It protects the Holy House of Nazareth, which Catholic tradition holds was miraculously transported here by angels in 1294.

Offida is a hilltop village famous for its ancient tradition of bobbin lace-making. It is anchored by the isolated, fortress-like Church of Santa Maria della Rocca, which dramatically overlooks a cliffside cliff edge.
