Austin’s capitol building
The Texas State Capitol, in downtown Austin, is a 302-foot-tall, National Historic Landmark completed in 1888. It is renowned as the largest state capitol building by gross square footage, standing 15 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol.
The building houses the Texas legislature and governor’s offices, featuring a stunning rotunda, historic monuments, and 22 acres of landscaped grounds .The building is constructed from local Sunset Red Granite.

Entering the building one can site works of art – celebrating the Texas victory at the Battle of Jacinto and the wounding of one legged Mexican commander, Santa Anna, in the war against Mexico which achieved its independence

There is also a portrait of Davy Crocket, one of the Texan heroes who lost his life in the Battle of the Alamo which preceded it and inspired the Texan fight for independence.
The interior also features portraits of Texas governors including George W Bush.
