Hiking Buzzards Roost

The dramatic and picturesque Big Sir coastline on California’s Central Pacific coast is renowned for its ancient groves of giant redwood trees which thrive in this moist coastal environment.

Big Sir offers about 100 different hikes of various lengths and difficulty. The two hour hike from the Big Sir river up to a scenic ridge top view of the ocean at Buzzards Roost showcases the best of hiking experiences here.

The trail begins following a peaceful stretch the bucolic Big Sir river before heading up an escarpment lined with beautiful redwood groves. The trail gets steeper and tougher in the final stretch to the top.

The timeless nature of the forest is on show here – the carcasses of giant ancient redwood lie fallen and tiny new redwoods spring up in their place.

Good fitness levels are required to get to the Buzzards Roost. The journey down and back is even more rewarding
