Historic Masserias of Puglia

In Italy—and specifically in Puglia—the properties that function exactly like Spanish or South American estancias are called masseries or masserias.

Similar to an estancia, a masseria is a historic, self-sufficient agricultural estate traditionally surrounded by vast olive groves( many are hundreds of years old) vineyards, and livestock pastures. Today, many have been masterfully restored into luxury boutique hotels and rural vacation rentals.

Built primarily between the 15th and 18th centuries, these estates feature thick limestone walls, high perimeter enclosures, and watchtowers to defend against North African pirates and bandits.

A massive internal stone courtyard serves as the heart of the estate, where all farming activities historically took place.

The wealthy landowners traditionally lived on the upper floors (piano nobile), while the farm labourers lived on the ground floor alongside the stables, olive presses, and tool sheds.
