Top Five Antigua

Antigua is known for its stunning beaches, rich history, and vibrant culture. Here are the top five sites to visit:

 

1. Nelson’s Dockyard:

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic naval dockyard dates back to the 18th century. It features well-preserved buildings, museums, and beautiful views, making it a great spot for history buffs.

 

2. Shirley Heights:

Known for its breathtaking panoramic views of English Harbour and Falmouth Harbour, Shirley Heights is a must-visit, especially during sunset. The site often hosts lively parties with local music and food on weekends.

 

3. Betty’s Hope:

Tour around the islands first sugar plantation which was built in 1674 – called Betty’s Hope and built by Christopher Codrington who named it after his daughter. The guide is the “amiable caretaker” Lionel George. Open 9 a.m. Monday to Saturday.

 

4. St John’s:

This bustling small capital is reknowned for its colourful street life and markets . Look for the game of Warri that is played on street corners and in bars. Played on wooden board in Antigua with wooden counters. (In Africa it is played with holes carved into the ground and seeds).

St. John’s Cathedral is an impressive Anglican cathedral known for its beautiful architecture and historical significance. The twin towers and vibrant interior make it a noteworthy visit.

The great West Indian cricketer ,Vivian Richards was born here and streets named after him. When the English cricket teams come to play at the famous St John’s ground the government declares a national holiday.

 

5. Beaches, Diving and Snorkelling:

There are more than 300 beaches on the island. Dickenson Bay is of the most popular beaches in Antigua, It’s perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Half Moon Bay is known for its stunning crescent-shaped beach and and calm waters.

For the more adventurous , dive sea caves, wall drops, coral canyons .Marine life includes turtles, sharks, barracudas and colourful reef fish. A 310 ft steamer which sank in 1917 is a good spot for divers and snorkellers as it’s most submerged point is 30 ft underwater and it’s highest nearly breaks the surface of the water.
