Baroque Towns of Sicily: Scicli

Scicli is one of several small towns in the South eastern corner of Sicily re constructed in the baroque style fashionable at the time when the region was devastated by an earthquake in the mid 17th century.

With a population of 30,000, Scicli is one if the smaller and lesser known of these towns which also includes Modica,Ragusa and Noto. All are UNESCO world heritage sites

Scicli is a less-crowded Baroque gem known for its golden limestone architecture and dramatic gorge setting.At its centre is Via Francesco Mormina Penna lined with stunning 18th-century palazzi, churches, and bustling sidewalk cafés.

The church of San Giovanni houses the astonishing Christo de Burgos, a painting of what appears to be Christ wearing a calf length skirt., which is actually his death shroud .Dating back to the 17th century it originated in the Spanish city of Burgos and during Spanish rule of Sicily was given to the city by a Spanish nobleman

Nearby is Palazzo Beneventano often dubbed the most beautiful Baroque palace in Sicily, famous for its elaborate, grotesque gargoyles and sculptural details.

And fans of the TV series Inspector Montalbano will instantly recognize the Town Hall here as the “Vigata” Police Station.

Perched on the rugged hill above the town,the Church of San Matteo offer is panoramic views of the entire valley. And Chiafura is fascinating archaeological site featuring ancient, overgrown cave dwellings carved into the cliff face overlooking the town.
