Festivals of Cádiz
Cádiz is home to some of the most vibrant, historic, and culturally distinct celebrations in Spain. The local festivals perfectly reflect the town’s irreverent humour, deep religious traditions, and maritime history.
Carnaval de Cádiz
The Cádiz Carnival in Febuary is legendary as the most satirical, witty, and famous street carnival in mainland Spain. Influenced by 16th-century Italian traders, it is completely different from Rio or Tenerife—here, the focus is on humour and social commentary rather than just spectacle.
The entire city dresses up in costumes (tipos). The streets fill with musical groups singing biting, satirical songs about politics and pop culture.
Look out for chirigotas (highly humorous musical troupes), comparsas (more serious, poetic groups), and coros (large choirs singing from flatbed trucks).
Semana Santa (Holy Week): While slightly more intimate than Seville’s massive event, Holy Week in Cádiz in March or April is spectacularly atmospheric. The city’s incredibly narrow streets mean massive religious floats (pasos) carried by brotherhoods must navigate tight corners with mere inches to spare, accompanied by solemn drums and spontaneous flamenco prayer-songs (saetas).
Corpus Christi: A grand, solemn procession in June where the streets of the old town are covered in aromatic herbs and rosemary. Children who recently made their First Communion parade alongside complex silver monstrances.
Quema de los Juanillos (Night of San Juan): To mark the summer solstice, locals build Juanillos—large, humorous rag dolls or effigies satirising local figures or events. On the night of 23 June, these figures are set on fire in massive bonfires along the city streets and beaches to burn away bad luck.
Fiesta de los Tosantos (All Saints’ Eve): Rather than focusing on ghosts, Cádiz celebrates On October 31 by dressing up dead animals and produce in the central food markets (Mercado Central). Market stalls feature pigs, chickens, rabbits, and fish cleverly costumed to mock politicians, celebrities, and sports stars.
