Historic Cartenega

Cartagena is a historic coastal city located on the northern coast of Colombia. Known for its colonial architecture, and beautiful beaches, Cartagena has in recent years become a popular tourist destination.

The city’s historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and features impressive fortifications built during the Spanish colonial era to protect against pirates

Key attractions include the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a massive fortress that offers panoramic views of the city, and the walled city itself, filled with plazas, museums, and shops. Cartagena also has a lively cultural scene, with festivals, music, and is known for its Caribbean influenced cuisine.

It was founded in 1533 by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Heredia and became one of the most important Spanish colonial ports in the Americas- a key hub for the gold, silver, and slave trade.

Cartegena was attacked multiple times by pirates such as Sir Francis Drake in 1586 and other European powers..In the Battle of Cartagena in 1741 Spanish forces repelled a massive British Invasion.
