Puritan London
Following the English Civil War Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarians took control of Government.
Puritan London under Cromwell’s new “Commonwealth “ Government which ruled from 1649 to 1658 was a strictly regulated pious society aimed at eradicating immorality, characterized by the closure of theatres, banning of Christmas, and strict Sunday observance.
As Lord Protector, Cromwell established a military-backed,, conservative Protestant, and often authoritarian rule that enforced moral codes against theater, gambling, and sports..

Acts were passed against adultery, blasphemy, and swearing. Public houses were closed on Sundays and fines were issued for “unnecessary” work.
Life was generally more sombre, with a push for simple living. However, Cromwell, who was an independent, also allowed Jews to return to England in 1656.
The city was governed under a heavily militarized “Commonwealth” where England was divided into 11 districts managed by Major-Generals.
There was a push against ostentatious fashion, such as, long hair, lace, and ribbons.
Industriousness was highly valued; “pointless” enjoyment was seen as sin.
People who were found to be working or playing sports on Sundays could be put in the stocks
