History
Before colonization, the region was home to several kingdoms and ethnic groups, including the Akan, Krou, and Mandé peoples.
The Ivory Coast became a French protectorate in the late 19th century and was officially designated a colony in 1893. During this time, the French established plantations for cash crops like cocoa and coffee.
The country gained independence from France in 1960, with Félix Houphouët-Boigny becoming its first president. He ruled for over three decades and is credited with promoting stability and economic development.
After Houphouët-Boigny’s death in 1993, the country faced political turmoil, leading to civil wars from 2002 to 2007 and again in 2010-2011, largely fueled by ethnic tensions and struggles for power.

Culture
French is the official language, while over 60 indigenous languages are spoken, including Akan languages (such as Baoulé and Agni) and Krou languages.
Ivorian music is renowned, with genres like Zouglou and Coupé-Décalé gaining popularity. Traditional dances and music often accompany celebrations and rituals.
Ivorian cuisine is diverse and includes staples like rice, cassava, and yams, often served with sauces made from vegetables, fish, or meat. Popular dishes include “foutou” (a starchy dish) and “attieke” (fermented cassava).
