Dubai the most modern and progressive of the United Arab Emirates and acts almost like an independent city-state. Located on the emirate’s northern coastline, over the last half-century the main city has emerged as a regional and global business hub. 

The discovery of oil in the 1960s and the revenues accrued helped accelerate the city’s development. Today less that 5% of Dubai’s revenue comes from oil; instead its Western business model propels its economy, with primary sources of revenue being tourism, real estate and financial services. Consequently, Dubai is home to large numbers of Western expatriates and English is spoken and understood by many locals. 

In a nutshell, Dubai is a desert city with incredible infrastructure and fairly liberal policies and attitudes for the region. It is known for its modern, innovative construction projects, including the world’s tallest building, the BurjKhalifa. Dubai is a city known for shopping, partying, sunbathing and fine dining.
